False-colour scanning electron micrograph of an unused sample of standard laboratory filter paper. This type of filter is used to separate the liquid from the solid parts in a suspension. Like most paper,it is made from wood pulp (in particular that obtained from spruce, poplar, pine and fir trees),hence the presence of the cellulose fibres visible here. The ideal filter paper requires that the fibres are sufficiently compressed to restrain the solid particles without hindering the free flow of the liquid. Magnification: x60 at 6x4.5cm size | |
