False-colour scanning electron micrograph of clean, standard filter paper (see H100/346 for dirty comparison),used to separate the liquid from the solid parts of a suspension. Most paper is made from wood pulp (in particular that obtained from spruce, poplar, pine and fir trees),hence the presence of the cellulose fibres visible here. The ideal filter paper requires that the fibres are sufficiently compressed to restrain the solid particles without hindering the free flow of the liquid. Magnification: x88 at 6x6cm size | |
