False colour scanning electron micrograph of a scratch & sniff sticker showing the unscratched microspheres, which contain the scent. Scratch & sniff,a 3M company product, uses the same technology as the reuseable "Post-it" note pads (also 3M's). The glue is contained in tiny spheres (15-40 micrometers) of urea formaldehyde resin, which rupture under finger pressure. Not all the spheres rupture at once making the stickers reuseable. A common form of the scratch & sniff are tattoos, which are stuck onto the skin using the glue spheres on one side & similar scratch & sniff spheres containing perfume on the other.
