Mitochondria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a mitochondrion (green, yellow, red) and rough endoplasmic reticulum (pink) from a pancreatic cell. Mitochondria have numerous internal membranes,or cristae, where respiration takes place, providing the cell with energy by oxidising sugars and fats. They are found in most cells, have their own DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) & replicate autonomously. The rough endoplasmic reticulum forms pathways in the cell. It is studded with ribosomes where proteins are synthe- sized. The pancreas produces hormones & digestive enzymes. Magnification: x15,100 at 6x7cm size | |
