False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of mitochondria (blue, circular) in a typical steroid-secreting cell,of the type found in the adrenal cortex, testis and ovary. The numerous mitochrondria which pack the cytoplasm of such cells possess unusual, tubular cristae, that appear as the small pink circles in this coloured section. Mitochondria are the sites of cellular respiration, the chemical mechanism responsible for the synthesis of cholesterol, the basic steroid molecule. Modifications to cholesterol depend on which steroid hormone is being synthesised. Magnification: x44,000 at 6x7cm size | |
