Rough endoplasmic reticulum. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a cultured animal cell revealing rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER). ER is the system of membranes seen running from top to bottom of image. Small granules attached to the membrane of the ER are ribosomes, the sites of protein synthesis. ER originates from the nuclear membrane and divides the cell cytoplasm into a network of cavities called cisternae. Small, rounded vesicles bud from the ER and transport proteins and fats from the ER around the cell. Magnification: x15,800 at 6x6cm size | |
