Secondary lysosome. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a secondary lysosome seen in a cell from the prostate. The lysosome (red) is a membrane bound structure that contains enzymes and substances that the cell wants to digest. Around the lysozyme are organelles, cell membranes (black) & nuclei (yellow/green). Lysosomes are particularly prevalent in cells of the kidneys and liver. A secondary lysosome is formed when an inactive, primary lysosome merges with a substance that is to be digested. Lysosomes may digest food brought into the cell, and destroy invading organisms or cellular debris. Magnification: x13,500 at 5x7cm size | |
