The Golgi apparatus is seen as a horse-shoe shaped structure of membranes and round vesicles amongst the cell's other organelles. The Golgi apparatus is usually located close to the cell nucleus and acts as a storage space for lipids and proteins produced by the cell. It contains a collection of flattened membrane-bound cisternae resembling a stack of plates. Vesicles emerging from these cisternae transport proteins and lipids around the cell.
