| Lysosomes. False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of lysosomes in a mouse kidney cell. Within the cell cytoplasm (coloured blue) are secondary lysosomes (red oval structures). Whereas primary lysosomes are uniformly granular (no examples in this view),secondary lysosomes contain a number of different structures. The contents of these lysosomes include red membrane structures and green vesicles. Lysosomes contain enzymes,and they are involved in cell digestive processes. Food brought into the cell is digested by lysosomes,as are debris and unusable membrane structures of the cell itself. Magnification: x27,000 at 6x4.5cm size | |
