False-colour transmission electron micrograph of the external surface of a cell nucleus (yellow),showing the nuclear envelope, dotted with crater- like pores. The envelope consists of a double membrane which encloses the nuclear DNA. The pores are pathways for the transport of larger molecules between the nucleus & the cytoplasm. The image was produced by freezing the cell, fracturing it in a vacuum and then coating it with metal or carbon. This metal or carbon 'replica' was then photographed using an electron microscope.
