HeLa cell research. Petri dishes containing cultured HeLa cells are sampled with a pipette. The pipette is used to remove nutrient medium on which the HeLa cells are growing. A new medium containing poliovirus vaccine will then be used to kill the HeLa cells. This provides an estimate of how much poliovirus have infected the cells. HeLa cells were the first human cell line, established in 1952,to research cancer. They were obtained from the cervix of Henrietta Lacks (after whom the cells are named). HeLa cells thrive well in the laboratory and are used in viral, genetic and anti-cancer research worldwide. Photographed at the Institute of Virology in Oxford,England | |
