HeLa cell research. Laboratory technician at a laminar flow cabinet doing HeLa cell research. The cabinet prevents contamination. He uses a pipette to remove nutrient medium in the HeLa cell petri dishes. A new medium containing poliovirus vaccine will be used to kill the HeLa cells. This provides an estimate of how much poliovirus have infected the cells. HeLa cells were the first human cell line, established in 1952,to research cancer. They were obtained from the cervix of Henrietta Lacks (after whom the cells are named). HeLa cells thrive in the laboratory and are used in viral, genetic and anti-cancer research.
