Octopus research. Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) involved in a learning test in a laboratory tank. The octopus has a highly- developed brain, and is thought to be the most intelligent of the invertebrates. Tests such as this have shown that octopuses have a good memory, can recognise colours and shapes, and can think through puzzles. This octopus lives throughout the world in warm waters. It lives near coasts and in shallow water, and feeds on crustaceans and bivalve molluscs. Octopuses hide in crevices when threatened, the blocks at upper right serving this purpose in this tank,Photographed at the Anton Dohrn zoological station in Naples,Italy | |
