Biological research. Culture of the cyanobacterium (blue-green alga) Synechocystis, showing a patch of larger,rapidly-growing cyanobacteria in a 'lawn' of smaller ones. Researchers studying photosynthesis in Synechocystis have identified a gene which affects the growth rate of the cyanobacterium. The cyanobacteria in the background lawn have had this gene removed and hence grow slowly. Those in the darker green patch have had the gene re-introduced,and so photosynthesise and grow at a much faster rate | |
