MODEL RELEASED. Human proteins produced by plants. A researcher inoculates a plant with engineered viruses that produce proteins for human therapeutic use. The leaf is simply rubbed with inoculant containing the modified virus. Known as 'overcoat' technology, the engineered plant viruses carry large peptides (proteins) on their surface. Introduced viruses rapidly replicate inside the plant, producing large quantities of protein which can be harvested. The unique proteins include human glucocerebrosidase to treat Gaucher's disease, and many types of industrial enzymes. Photographed at the Scottish Crop Research Institute in Dundee,Scotland | |
