BCG vaccine. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of BCG vaccine infecting a human white blood cell. BCG vaccines are live but attenuated Mycobacterium bovis cells that immunize patients against tuberculosis. The BCG vaccine is seen as a cluster of membrane-bound circles (orange),surrounded by the cytoplasm (green) of the blood cell. These weakened bacterial cells will serve to sensitise the immune system,so that if tuberculosis infection occurs, the immune system reacts more rapidly, producing antibodies that kill invading microorganisms. BCG vaccine was discovered in 1924. Magnification: x24,500 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x84,000 at 8x10 inch size | |
