Liposomes. Computer enhanced coloured light micrograph of liposomes. A liposome is an artificial vesicle made from phospholipids which can have many uses in biology. For example, various components of biological membranes can be incorporated into liposomes to allow investigation of their properties. Also, enzymes can be immobilized by encapsulating them into liposomes,as can numerous drugs. The liposomes can then be made to fuse with specific cell membranes under controlled conditions. This means liposomes can be used in experiments such as "targeted" gene or drug therapy. Magnification: x400 at 6x6cm size | |
