DNA sequencer tubes. Gloved hand holding thin capillary tubes used in sequencing human DNA for the human genome project. DNA is fragmented and passes through these tubes under the influence of an electric field. Smaller fragments move faster than larger ones, and they are detected by a laser as they leave the tubes. The human genome project aims to find the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) base sequence of all human genes, lengths of DNA which have specific functions in an organism. This will allow for improved drug design and a greater understanding of genetic diseases. Photographed at the Sanger Centre in Cambridge,England | |
