Human genome research. Gloved hand removing frozen cell lines from cryostorage for the human genome project. These cells contain human DNA (deoxyribo- nucleic acid),and are stored in liquid nitrogen (at -196 degrees Celsius). DNA is the substance which controls every characteristic of an organism. It is made up of two chains linked by bases. Specific sequences of bases (genes) perform a specific task within the organism. The human genome project aims to find the base sequence of all the human genes, allowing for improved drug design and a greater understanding of genetic diseases.
