DNA electrophoresis silica wafer. Microfluidic dev- ice for analysing samples of DeoxyriboNucleic Acid (DNA) by electrophoresis. It analyses DNA in 30 seconds - almost 100 times faster than previous methods. The wafer has had narrow channels etched in it by techniques similar to those used to make electronic microchips. Samples containing fragments of DNA called Short Tandem Repeats are put in the channels. The fragments move apart when an electric current is applied, allowing the DNA's composition to be studied. This device is suitable for genetic linkage studies, forensics & clinical diagnostics. It was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,USA | |
