Gene synthesiser. Computer-controlled machine for the synthesis of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA),the molecule which carries organisms' genetic material. The four bases which make up DNA are stored in the marked, brown bottles at lower centre. The bases are thymine (T),guanine (G),adenine (A) and cytosine (C). The bases form a DNA molecule by linking together two intertwined, spiral chains of sugar and phosphate groups. The DNA molecule is thousands of bases long. The bases may appear anywhere in the chain and their exact location affects the functioning of the DNA molecule; small differences in composition can result in large differences in behaviour | |
