Model released: Preparation of a DNA sample for electrophoresis. A researcher adding a solution of a radioactive labelling isotope to samples of DNA. The isotope combines with parts of the DNA molecule. After separation of bands of DNA by gel electrophoresis, the sample is placed in contact with X-ray film. The radiation from the DNA bands records on the film, which may then allow the DNA to be studied (a process called autoradiography). The perspex screen between the researcher and the sample prevents the passage of alpha radiation from the isotope. The samples being studied here are from sufferers of retinoblastoma | |
