DNA fingerprinting. Technician works over an ultraviolet light box to prepare electrophoresis gels used to separate fragments of DNA into bands. DNA is extracted from a subject's white blood cells, sperm or hair follicles. The pattern of DNA bands produced is unique to one individual human being or animal,& forms a kind of genetic "identity card". DNA fingerprints are used to prove conclusively whether people are related, for instance in immigration disputes. The technique is also used to identify & convict criminals from tissues left at the scene of a crime. Photographed at ICI Cellmark Diagnostics,Oxfordshire | |
