MODEL RELEASED. Zinc finger blocking a gene. Dr Louise Fairall analyses by computer a zinc finger complex molecule (yellow) attached to a coloured strand of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). A zinc finger is a protein molecule containing zinc which can switch genes off. Fairall and colleagues Sir Aaron Klug and Yen Choo conducted this research at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge,England. The zinc finger complex is a protein they have engineered made up of three zinc fingers. It switches off a gene on DNA which causes leukaemia. Zinc fingers may thus be used in gene therapy.
