DNA and human chromosomes. Computer artwork of the molecule deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) superimposed over human chromosomes. The DNA molecule (yellow) contains inherited instructions needed for the development of a living organism. It is composed of two strands twisted into a helical shape. Each strand consists of an outer sugar-phosphate backbone from which nucleotide bases project inwardly. The sequences formed by pairs of these bases make up the genetic code in the form of genes. The DNA is contained within the chromosomes (brown) which are linear threads in the cell's nucleus. Humans have 23 pairs of these chromosomes | |
