Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a closed circle or "plasmid" of DNA. A plasmid is a length of DNA that can exist apart from the chromosome, and which can replicate on its own. Occurring in both bacteria & yeast, these symbiotic pieces of DNA can be transferred from cell to cell and often act as vehicles for antibiotic resistance. In genetic engineering, plasmids were first used to carry foreign DNA spliced onto them, then introduced into a bacteria where it expressed the genetic information carried by the transplanted DNA. These experiments led to the biotechnology revolution. Magnification: x20,000 at 6x4.5cm size | |
