Microsporum fungus. Light micrograph of the fungus,Microsporum gypseum. The cylindrical fruiting bodies (macroconidia) are connected by vegetative filaments called hyphae. M. gypseum causes ringworm infections in dogs and horses,and sporadic infections in humans. The principle sites of infection are the hair and the skin. Treatment is with anti-fungal drugs.
