This vast complex of ruined temples,statues,pylons and buildings is located on the banks of the river Nile in the ancient city of Thebes,now Luxor. Construction of the temple first began in the 16th Century BC by the pharaoh Thutmose I,and continuously extended and built upon by successive generations of rulers. Notable features of the temple include the front entrance (upper right) which consists of a huge walled tower known as the First Pylon,and a rectangular lake (centre left),known as the Sacred Lake.The entire complex is surrounded by a walled enclosure (partly visible at lower left corner) | |
