Ait Benhaddou, ancient fortress town in the High Atlas mountain range of southern Morocco. The town dates from the 13th century. The fortresses (or kasbahs) house individual families, and reach heights of around 10 metres. They are built using clay bricks, some of which are seen drying in the sun in the foreground. This building technique is traditional in this arid environment. The town is now mostly deserted. It is a tourist attraction and has been the scene of many films, including Lawrence of Arabia and Jesus of Nazareth. Ait Benhaddou is on the UNESCO World Heritage List | |
