Radioactivity analysis. Researcher using a geiger counter to measure the radioactivity levels of moss gathered from a mountainside. Part of the Geiger counter is a tube filled with low pressure gas. As radiation passes through the tube it ionises (charges) the gas particles. The number of charged particles and hence the radiation level is recorded on a dial. Among the items on the table is a microscope. This work is being carried out by the French government agency,l'Institut de Protection et de Secrete Nucleaire (ISPN).
