Oil spill. Inflatable booms being used in an effort to contain an oil spill in a lake in Ecuador. Two oil pipelines run next to Papallacta Lake in the Andes Mountains. The original pipeline was built in the 1970s and was in a bad state of repair when it broke and leaked oil into the lake in 2003. Booms are used to contain the oil, which floats on the water's surface. The oil can then be skimmed off. Spills of oil can cause severe environmental damage and may harm human health. This lake supplies much of the water for Quito, the capital of Ecuador | |
