Oil slick. Oil slick coming ashore in a residential area. Oil is lighter than water and so floats on the surface of the sea when spilled, being pushed along by sea currents and the wind. This slick originated in a spill of about 70,000 tonnes of light crude oil from the oil tanker Sea Empress off the coast of Milford Haven,Wales,in February 1996.
