Algal bloom. View of the water of a recreational lake showing discolouration caused by excessive growth of blue-green algae due to water pollution. This phenomenon is known as water bloom. It may also have natural causes, such as an unusual amount of sunshine. In most cases, however,it is caused by fertilisers containing nitrogen and phosphorus running into the water. Some species of blue-green algae release harmful toxins which can kill zooplankton, fish, aquatic birds and even humans. Water bloom may also lead to eutrophica- tion, the progressive consumption of oxygen in the water, resulting in the death of all animal and plant species. Photographed in Norwich,England | |
