River pollution. Discoloured, polluted water of the Queen River in Queenstown,Tasmania. This pollution is due to copper mines located upstream. Queenstown has been a mining centre since 1883. The Queen River is polluted primarily by acid drainage from the old mines. Acid drainage must be reduced by more than 95% for life to return to the river. Polluted water from the Queen River flows into the King River which is arguably the most polluted river in Australia | |
