Effects of air pollution on historic buildings. Acid rain has damaged this stone sculpture on the roof of the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) in the main square of Cracow,Poland. Originally built in the 14th Century, the Cloth Hall was rebuilt between 1556-1560. Cracow,a World Heritage Site, has been on the U.N. Immediate Attention list since 1973. Whilst 80 buildings have been restored,1700 need urgent treatment. Pollution is ruining the health of Cracow's citizens, whose life expectancy is 3 years shorter than other Poles,& are twice as likely to suffer from lung cancer. Cases of chronic bronchitis, asthma & heart disease are more frequent than elsewhere | |
