Smoke at sunset. View of the setting Sun dimly visible through a haze of low-level smoke. This photograph was taken at Most in the Czech Republic. The region has many power stations burning lignite (brown coal) from nearby open cast mines. In addition, the mine workers are given free coal for domestic heating use. The result is a thick layer of smoke which pervades the valley for much of the time. Whenever an atmospheric temperature inversion occurs, the smoke is trapped at ground level for days and the population wear face masks. The church at bottom was moved 800 metres in 1975 to allow access to the coal seam beneath | |
