Waste landfill site. Waste trucks and bulldozers operating at a landfill site for domestic waste. The waste, which is brought to the site by the trucks,is moved into position by the bulldozers and protected by covering. Landfill sites are used to dispose of about 90% of the world's domestic waste. The type of material dumped must be controlled to prevent chemical toxins leaching into local groundwater. Leaching may also be prevented by lining the site with synthetic materials or impermeable clay. In time the dump may be covered with soil, landscaped, and the land sold to developers.
