Waste landfill site. A bulldozer dumping refuse at a landfill site for the disposal of domestic and commercial waste. Landfill sites take about 90% of the world's domestic waste. The type of material disposed must be controlled to prevent toxins leaching into local groundwater. Leaching may also be prevented by lining the site with synthetic materials or impermeable clay. In time the dump may be covered with soil, landscaped, and the land sold to developers. Gases generated by underground decay of organic waste sometimes build up,however, and can lead to dangerous explosions | |
