Waste disposal in a landfill. Landfill sites are used as a depository for 90% of the world's domestic waste materials. The type of material in the landfill has to be controlled to prevent toxins or hazardous materials leaching into the local groundwater. The leaching is also prevented by lining the landfill sites with impermeable clay or synthetic materials. When the site is full,it may be covered with soil and landscaped. Gases generated by biological processes in the covered site (notably methane) may be recovered. This landfill site was photographed near Vancouver,Canada | |
