Asphalt lake. Workers walking across an asphalt lake. They are walking on the hardened asphalt below the surface of the water. The dark areas on the lake are patches of asphalt that are above the surface of the water. Sir Walter Raleigh is credited with discovering this lake in 1595,which is the largest deposit of asphalt in the world. It covers a surface area of approximately 360,000 square metres. Asphalt is a semi-solid substance composed of bitumen and other inert mineral matter. It is mixed with gravel and used in road- surfacing. Photographed at La Brea,Trinidad | |
