Asphalt lake. Asphalt (black) being pushed to the surface of the lake by the pumping out of the lake's water. The exposed asphalt will harden overnight and vehicles can then drive onto the asphalt to recover it. Sir Walter Raleigh is credited with discovering this lake in 1595,which is the largest deposit of asphalt in the world. It covers a surface area of approximately 360,000 square metres. Asphalt is a semi-solid substance composed of bitumen and other inert mineral matter. It is mixed with gravel for use in road-surfacing and roofing material. Photographed at La Brea,Trinidad | |
