Rome,the capital city of Italy,seen from space by the Ikonos satellite. North is at top. To the east of the River Tiber (Tevere) is the Colosseum (Colosseo,centre right). Built in AD72,it hosted fights between gladiators,slaves,prisoners and wild animals. Chariot races were held in the Circus Maximus (Circo Massimo),which stood in the oblong area at lower right,from at least the fourth century BC. Launched in 1999,Ikonos was the first commercial satellite to collect data at one-metre resolution. The satellite,which orbits at an altitude of 681 kilometres,is owned by Space Imaging,Colorado,USA.
