Amsterdam. Landsat satellite image of Holland, showing Amsterdam & the IJsselmeer. Amsterdam is at lower centre (blue-grey). The IJsselmeer is one of the great feats of engineering: the gradual reclamation of land from the North Sea. The West Friesian Islands are at the entrance to the IJsselmeer, which is protected by a great dyke, seen as a thin white line. Within the dyke, four huge areas of land have been reclaimed. These "polders" have distinctive field patterns, with a large amount of blue in them. A second dyke cuts across the inner part of the IJsselmeer. The area within it will be reclaimed by the year 2000 | |
