Photograph of the eggs of the cabbage moth Mamestra brassicae, normally pearly white, but which here (blue) have been parasitized by the chalcid wasp,Trichogramma evanescens. The female wasp pierces the egg depositing her brood, the larvae feed on and destroy the host egg. Cabbage moths lay their eggs in cabbage plant foliage. Once hatched the larvae are destructive of the leaves & heart of the crop. The parasitizing habits of Trichogramma have been employed in biological pest control experiments & the wasps reared commercially in the USA to eliminate specific crop pests.
