The west coast of Luzon, the main island in the Philippines, seen from space. This view was taken looking south. Just inland,to the left of centre,is a large grey-brown area. This is ash deposited on the side of Mount Pinatubo, whose eruption in June 1991 led to great loss of life. Grey ash and debris may also be seen choking the rivers of the area: this has led to fears that heavy rain in the near future will cause landslides. Manilla Bay is at top left, and Lingayen Gulf at bottom left. This was the first Shuttle image of the area following the eruption, taken by the crew of Atlantis during Mission STS-44 of 24 November to 1 December 1991 | |
