Chicxulub crater. Coloured magnetic anomaly map of the Chicxulub impact crater which may have caused the death of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. North is at top right. Anomalies (red, yellow & blue) occur where the local magnetic field differs from the expected value (green). The main anomaly peak of the crater (at centre) is caused by deep, magnetic rocks that were uplifted by the impact. Smaller peaks around it are caused by melted debris which had the ancient magnetic field value "frozen" within them when they solidified. Other anomalies further away were not caused by the impact. The crater is on the Yucatan peninsula,Mexico | |
