Deforestation in Brazil seen from space. View of part of the Polonoroeste Resettlement Project area in Rondonia State,Brazil. Scenes from Skylab missions in 1973-4 showed this area of the Amazon Basin to be virgin rain forest. In the late 1970s,the Brazilian Government designated the area as a resettlement region for people from the drought- prone north east and urban south. The region, equal to 80% of the size of France, now shows extensive deforestation alongside main and side roads and river courses. The extent of loss of the rain forest is greater than in views taken in May 1985 (Mission 51-G). This view was obtained from Shuttle Mission STS-46,31 July - 8 August 1992 | |
