Salt pans. Man raking salt in a salt pan into a pile to allow it to dry. Salt pans are pools of sea water which are allowed to evaporate, leaving behind the minerals dissolved in them. The most abundant of these is sodium chloride; common table salt. Salt is an important raw material in the chemical industry, and is also widely used in the preservation and flavouring of food.
