Mangrove swamp. Aerial photograph of the Ord River Delta in Western Australia, with mangroves lining the water channels. Salt water from the incoming sea mixes with the fresh water of the river and makes it brackish. Salt levels vary depending on whether it is high tide or low tide. Mangroves are tropical trees and shrubs with aerial roots, which form dense thickets in muddy tidal swamps. The muddy plains (grey) are flood plain zones, which become submerged during very high tides. Mangrove vegetation is adapted to survive the high salinity of the water, and their roots (pneumatophores) allow gaseous exchange to counteract the poorly aerated soil | |
