Mangrove swamp. Mangroves (family Rhizophoraceae) are moderate sized trees, which grow on low, often submerged tropical coasts. They have several adaptations to cope with being surrounded by mud and water. The seed germinates while the fruit is still attached to the parent plant. When it falls,it is already a substantial young seedling, several of which are seen. This type of mangrove has buttress roots that provide the trees with support in the mud and increase the surface area for gas exchange. Mangroves form dense, intertwined thickets along the coastline, trapping silt and sediment, thereby causing a gradual build up of land. Photographed in Australia | |
